Consultation

IMG_0052.jpg

Your first scheduled visit is considered a consultation, and generally lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. The consultation phase can extend up to 2 or 3 sessions (in rare occasions more), after which I will provide diagnostic feedback and treatment recommendations. For children and adolescents, I typically meet once with the child/patient and once with the guardian/parent(s). We will discuss your concerns and select the best resources to help with your difficulties. Treatment recommendations may include beginning treatment with me, or referral to another provider or program that may better address the needs that have been identified.

I am also available for consultation purposes only, to receive a second opinion regarding your diagnosis or presenting issues.  I can offer my services to help you navigate the often confusing mental health system and identify good treatment options.

Psychotherapy

Therapy sessions are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time, usually on a weekly basis, and typically last 45 minutes. We can discuss meeting more or less often and for longer sessions as needed. I generally do not work with prescribed timeframes for psychotherapy, but rather continually assess and openly discuss your changing needs and goals. Thus, psychotherapy proceeds for some on a short-term basis over a period of weeks, and it proceeds on a long-term basis over a period of years for others.

Supervision

I have taught undergraduate psychology courses at Long Island University (Brooklyn), supervised art therapy interns at a domestic violence shelter, and doctoral interns and externs at Jacobi Medical Center, both on the consultation liaison rotation and in child/adolescent therapy. I currently supervise doctoral students at Long Island University. I've supervised licensed art therapists but am also open to providing supervision to psychologists or social workers who want to integrate creativity or art-making into their work with children or adults. My master's and dissertation research were both on vicarious trauma in the setting of working with interpersonal trauma, so I have expertise in providing support and supervision for clinicians working with demanding caseloads and/or mostly traumatized patients.
